Carry out a test fit on your existing building

An example of a blocking and stacking diagram

Next comes the stage when the theoretical need can assessed against actual buildings: A test fit should be carried out, starting with your current premises, using the information from the accommodation strategy. This will show how they meet your business needs. Other premises that may be available or being considered will also be looked at later. The objective of this stage is to find out what kind of property your organisation needs and to find out if you already have it. The test fit will be shown as a series of plans, or a 3D drawing of the building. On it will be superimposed the various departments and functions. This may be the first time that you will have seen drawings that fit your organisation into a real building. This exercise will often be termed blocking and stacking.

A decision may not be clear from this exercise – for example, the cost/benefits of re-organising may outweigh those of taking on expansion space. These business decisions can only be taken by the organisation but at the same time you should take the advice of your professional team.

This stage should be taken very seriously. It allows you to see your own premises in the light of your needs. This enables you to make objective decisions about something that is easily seen in a subjective manner.
